NALA Rescued from Puppy Mill
Nala was rescued from a puppy mill in Missouri where she probably had 100 puppies and little human contact. She was named Lara when she arrived at PCSR, and though she seemed healthy, her vet exam revealed heartworm. Hope pleaded her case to the PSCR board, who thankfully OK'd the expensive treatment necessary to try to cure her. My husband and I brought Lara home halfway through her treatment ordeal (arsenic is the drug they have to use), and within a day we knew that whether she could be cured or not, she would be ours forever!
When our 5-year-old granddaughter met her, she said Lara looked like a lion, and thought her name should be Nala for the young lioness heroine of the Lion King. So Nala she became!
Like many puppy mill dogs, Nala spent several weeks learning that humans were OK. We even fed her by hand for awhile to help her bond with us. But today she is heartworm-free and races across the room to leap into our laps for a hug. She knows lots of parlor tricks, loves her daily walks, and guards the bird feeder zealously - no squirrels allowed!
What a sweetheart!
