Why I Foster: Nothing Happens without a Reason
By Lisa Dorzweiler Several years ago I found a lost and very neglected female Sheltie. This poor little dog had been wandering the neighborhood for days and was very frightened, but I was finally able to bait this little waif with McDonald's French fries. My husband Wil and I spent hours cutting mats and cleaning up Gypsy, which is what we named her. I had several dogs of my own, and our only female, Heidi, was getting growled at, so we knew Gypsy needed to be an only dog. I spoke with my sister who referred me to Hope at PCSR. My sister had adopted her Sheltie mix, Sassy, eight years before. I was so relieved when Hope said 'yes' to finding a loving home for Gypsy. I was amazed how quickly Gypsy was able to be vetted, spayed, microchipped, featured on the web site, provided premium food, and a new soft bed. Within two weeks, her forever family came and adopted her. I believe nothing happens without a reason. I've been blessed by not only the friendships of the wonderful volunteers of PCSR but by the unconditional love from the twenty-six, four-legged friends who have been able to renew their spirits and recoup their health in our home. It is such an honor to be entrusted as a foster for needy dogs; we have helped dogs that had never felt the loving touch of a human hand. It is so rewarding and at the same time bittersweet when these babies get to go to their forever homes. I cry happy tears every time a dog leaves our home, but we continue the job of fostering because we make a difference. One dog at a time. If you think you have the heart and home for this amazing job, I'd like to invite you to partake in the gift. My husband and I both agree this has made our lives and the lives of the families that have adopted from us very happy.
