Ricky

A shy sable and white 31# sheltie has come to us from a sanctuary in the Midwest .  He has had a number of name changes through his transition to a real life in Colorado .  But because of his condition when he arrived, we have settled on an unusual name.  This 2-year-old sheltie was covered in ticks and fleas and I do mean covered.  The vet who first examined him was so appalled at his condition; we briefly referred to him as Rikki Tikki Tavi.  And the name stuck.  So he answers to "Ricky."  With loving care, after only three weeks, the vet has given him a clean bill of health.  His bloodwork is just fine.  The ticks are a thing of the past.  And a very long-term ear infection is responding to medication.

Ricky is not sure that the world is a nice place to be.  He is hand shy with strangers, reluctant to take a treat from a person and will need time and patience for the wonderful little dog in him to emerge.  Shelties are shy by nature so trust can be an issue with many of them.  Little Ricky's foster parents tell us that he is a very different dog already after only three weeks.  He will attach himself to a woman before a man, is starting to enjoy the process of bathing and grooming and asks to be petted.  It will take a remarkable family to give Ricky the opportunity to become the lap dog he wants to be.  Tiny pieces of cheese or other tasty morsels may be the key to establishing a meaningful relationship.  His unusual markings and dense fur will make Ricky a real show-stopper when he is brave enough to go out into the world with his people.  Little things mean a lot to a shy dog.  We have many resource materials to help with this kind of issue and it would be our pleasure to help.

Please begin the adoption process by considering whether this is the best time for you to adopt a dog that will be your responsibility for the next 12 -15 years.  Dogs give us unconditional love and we need to return that love with the very best care possible and a firm commitment to keep them with us 'until death do you part.'  A lousy economy is no excuse to dump your dog.  But that is exactly what is happening in every city and town in our country.  It is a horrible phenomenon that is inexcusable.  And we strive every single day to make sure that our adoptions are 'for ever.'

Please read the adoption information section and move forward to the online application.  We are a highly selective breed specific rescue that puts the needs of the dogs first.  We are delighted that you are looking in on one of our favorite dogs.
